Unfortunately the plastic bit is just the cover, the filter is like an air filter, not the fully sealed type the just screws into the bulkhead.

I really don't want to have to go to BMW and have to buy a new one. I really like my kidneys.

Not sure if the plastic bit is integral to the filter but if you're prepared to go ghetto on it you can jam a screwdriver all the way through the side and unscrew the filter and cover all in one go. Messy and rather inelegant but you don't need to buy a fancy tool, and it stops that irritating nagging noise in your ear!

I am servicing the wife's car - it is a BMW 318is E36 shape. For the love of all that is holy, I cannot get the oil filter cover off. All the advice I have seen on the internet has pictures of bolts and star type shapes on the top of it. I have tried attacking it with a chain type oil filter remover, but as the cover is plastic it doesn't seem to even attempt it :? . I just isn't budging.

The filter is the black plastic covered bit near the bottom of the picture:

If anyone has any advice then I would greatly appreciate it, I can't cope with the nagging any more :( Oh and if the advice means I don't have to buy anything, I would be really, really grateful :D

Rich- clearly a useless mechanic
