Re: Need for a Reverse Gear

So I read that to mean all cars must be equipped with a reverse gear. So if a new member with a bike engined car turned up at a solo with an electric reverse system in working order, SVA approved and legal for the road would we let him compete? or will he need to have some form of Quaife type reverse box at £600!
Note his car is road legal without reverse.
This is an example of what I said about the blue book, there's lot's of different ways it can be interpreted. If in doubt ask the organisers before you go, we're a friendly bunch and don't bite (much)

Two bike engined cars competed in a Bristol Solo a couple of years ago. They both had electric reverse gears, One of the cars managed to spin onto the grass with his nose pointing at a hedge, the electric reverse was not man enough to haul the car off of the grass back up the 2" high tarmac lip. We had to push it ! (how we laughed ;) )

Reverse is a good idea for an Autosolo, and you're not going to be very competitive if it won't pull the skin off a rice pudding

The need for a reverse gear is something of a "hot topic" in the SW hillclimb & sprint scene. There are a number of drivers who have bike engined kit cars, but no working reverse. Only an unattached token lever :!:  It's common knowledge too.
So my advice is if you're scrutineering, and you come across a bike engined car, ask the driver to demonstrate reverse gear in action. If it works, then fine. If it doesn't, then they should not compete.

To be honest, watching these bike engined cars in the Solo it just seemed like the wrong sort of event for them to be honest. They would get bogged down in low speed corners, then suddenly shoot forward when the revs got high enough like a scalded cat... just in time to brake for the next cone and watch the whole process start again
They seemed to spin a lot more than the other cars aswell, probably due to the same reason. And the noise when they get put into first from neutral was :( (ouch!)
