Restoration of threads in alloy castings?

Post by TeamToad » Thu Mar 18, 2010 10:36 am

Does anyone know of a mobile thread restoration service in the area?
I've a 5/16 UNC bolt sheared off in the alloy block of my MGB V8 that I can't get out. Also three 1/4 UNC bolts sheared in the engine front cover. The car's in my garage and can't be reassembled til the threads are recovered or fixed with an insert.
Someone suggested there was a firm called Thread Doctor in the Farnborough area, but I can't find them on the internet.
Any ideas or contacts would be very welcome.
Thanks, guys.

I think I have a 5/16" UNC "helicoil" kit at home. If you ring me later this evening, I'll check. It worked great on the Mini gearbox casing. You "just" need to use an extractor to get the broken stud out...

I know a guy in Reading who will do alloy welding and has rewelded bosses etc. for me to retap when Ive had this problem with TR gearbox and overdrive bits. Much more reliable than helicoiling, but you do need to strip it all out and give it to him sparkly clean before he will even look at it. If its any use get in touch and ill point you at him.

Thanks for the tip, Tony
Fortunately, I was able to do it in situ with the kit that Paul lent me. Very worrying, drilling into the front of the block with an angle drive on the drill and wondering whether it was central and true. But it all went back together OK, so no problems til the next one now!
